Lucid offers the 2022 Air in five basic configurations: Pure (480 horsepower), Touring (620 horsepower), Grand Touring (800 horsepower), Dream R (933 horsepower), and Dream P (1,111 horses). The base Pure model has one electric motor, which is mounted at the back of the car and drives the rear wheels. All other models have two electric motors – one in the front and one in the rear – that enable the all-wheel drive. This may sound like a big performance disparity on paper, but in the real world, every Lucid Air is fast. Select the Air’s Swift or Sprint modes, and the car positively rockets off the line with a gut punch of torque and enough force to leave you plastered to your seat. Throttle response is immediate and snappy, and the Air delivers tremendous passing power. Even the midrange to lower trims can dash from zero to 60 mph in around three seconds. Once you’ve satisfied your need for speed, select the Smooth mode, and the Air dials back the power and prioritizes range and efficiency. The electric powertrain wafts the car along in a calm and relaxed fashion, but there’s still plenty of muscle on tap for zipping around town and cruising on the highway. The power delivery is just gentler and more refined.
The Lucid Air is one of the most fuel-efficient electric vehicles on the market. The Grand Touring model gets an exceptional 131 MPG equivalent in combined city/highway driving, while the Dream Edition R and P models return 125 and 116 MPGe, respectively. The EPA hasn’t yet evaluated the Pure and Touring models.
The Lucid Air’s driving range varies based on its trim level, but even the base model has a longer range than any other current EV. The Dream Edition R achieves the Air’s longest driving range of 520 miles on a full charge, followed by the Air Grand Touring at 516 miles, and the Air Dream Edition P at 471 miles. The Air Pure and Touring trims both offer 406 miles of range. It is worth noting, however, that opting for the Air’s larger wheel and tire combinations shaves a few miles off these estimates. Stick with the 19-inch wheels for the best mileage.
The Lucid Air’s charging time depends on the method used. The Air can regain up to 300 miles of range in just 20 minutes when plugged into a DC Fast Charging station (Level 3). A 240-volt outlet or a Level 2 public charging station can fully charge the battery in about 13 hours. A standard 120-volt household-style power outlet (Level 1) can add a mile or two of range per hour, which is handy to use in a pinch but not practical long term.
The Air is an all-new vehicle, so it’s hard to say how long the battery will last. Lucid covers the battery with an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty.
The Lucid Air provides an enticing mix of sports sedan agility and luxury car comfort. The Air’s steering is crisp and nicely weighted, and it’s fairly easy to maneuver in tight areas. It feels stable and predictable through turns with minimal side-to-side body lean, due in part to its low-slung battery pack. The suspension also offers great compliance. Dips and cracks in the pavement are noticed, but larger bumps are soaked up with ease. The brakes provide linear and robust stopping power, and the Air’s regenerative braking system is strong enough to slow the car to a full stop in its highest setting (known as one-pedal driving). Lower settings allow the car to coast more when you lift off the throttle.
The Lucid Air isn’t quite as fast as some of its high-end EV rivals, but that’s like calling a bronze-medal-winning sprinter a slowpoke. The Air Dream Edition P can rip from zero to 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds and notch a top speed of 168 mph. The Dream Edition R and Grand Touring models can sprint to 60 mph in 2.7 and three seconds, respectively, while the Touring model can dash in 3.2 seconds. We expect the rear-wheel-drive Pure model to be a second or two slower.
Yes, Lucid offers all-wheel drive as an option in the base Air Pure trim, and it comes standard in all upper trim levels.
The Lucid Air certainly isn’t cheap, but it has the interior to back up that lofty price tag. The Air’s cabin has a sleek and urbane design, meticulous build quality, and luxe materials like leather, open-pore wood, and aluminum from tip to tail. Even the interior plastics have a soft and attractive finish. A variety of color combinations are available, and each is inspired by different California locales, like Santa Monica and Lake Tahoe. The interior does let in more wind noise than expected though. Overall, the Air’s cabin is a big step up from the spartan accommodations of the Tesla Model S. It’s roughly on par with the Audi e-Tron GT, but it isn’t as opulent as the Mercedes-Benz EQS.
The Lucid Air’s infotainment system manages to be both futuristic and user-friendly, which isn’t often the case. A curved 34-inch display, called the Glass Cockpit, is mounted prominently behind the steering wheel, and it’s essentially three touch screens in one. The touch screen on the left manages basic vehicle functions like the headlights, door locks, and windshield wipers. The middle touch screen is an instrument cluster with speed, charge level, gear position, and safety alert information. The touch screen on the right handles the media, radio, and navigation functions. It’s a feast for the eyes, and it doesn’t take long to acclimate to, thanks in part to its simple layout, slick graphics, and quick responses. It’s also accompanied by another touch screen, called the Pilot Panel, that retracts into the center of the dashboard when not in use, and it provides more real estate to access features like the seat adjustments and climate controls. Above it are a few physical controls for the audio volume, air temperature, and fan speed, so you don’t have to rely on a tap or swipe to control every function. The Lucid Air receives over-the-air (OTA) software updates that can fix issues and roll out new features. Still, some updates may need to be performed by a Lucid mobile technician or at a service center.
The Lucid Air features front and rear trunks. The front trunk, or frunk, has 7.1 cubic feet of space, and it’s large enough to stow a load of groceries or a couple of backpacks. It’s also split into two tiers, which helps keep items from rolling around. The rear trunk has a unique clamshell design with an opening that’s as wide as the car itself. Loading and unloading cargo is a cinch, and there’s a generous 16.1 cubic feet of room to accommodate everything from golf clubs and carry-on luggage to a baby stroller.
The Lucid Air is a four-door sedan with five seats. Eventually, a ritzier four-seat layout will be offered once production ramps up. The Air’s front seats are supple and supportive, and the range of seating adjustments makes it easy to find a comfy driving position. Taller occupants should find plenty of headroom and legroom upfront. Outward visibility is great in all directions as well. The rear seats are similarly plush and long-haul comfortable, and this space feels airy, especially with the available Glass Canopy windshield, which extends from the hood to the middle of the roof. That said, rear headroom may be a bit snug for some passengers. Synthetic leather upholstery is standard. Upgrades include genuine leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats with massage functions, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and power rear sunshades.
