Latest Update: 2023 BYD Seagull EV arrived in April this year, with a starting price tag of $10,600.

BYD, the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, has recently unveiled its latest offering in the form of the Seagull. This 5-door electric hatchback is a prime example of what BYD does best – providing customers with value. Despite falling into the category of micro-electric cars in China, the Seagull is surprisingly spacious at 3.78 meters in length, beating out other models such as the Dacia Spring, electric Fiat 500, and Renault Twingo. What’s more impressive is the price tag, starting from just RMB 73,800, which is equivalent to just over $10,600 or €9,600.

The Seagull offers just one power option – a single electric motor with a 55 kW power output and 135 Nm of torque. According to the company, the Seagull can go from 0 to 50 km/h in just 4.9 seconds, making it perfect for city driving. The motor is powered by either a 30.08 kWh or 38.88 kWh battery pack, with a range of 305 km and 405 km, respectively. Recharging from 30% to 80% only takes 30 minutes.

With its competitive price, the Seagull is now BYD’s cheapest electric vehicle and will compete in the highly contested sub-RMB 100,000 vehicle market. This segment represents over 19% of the entire automotive market in China, with over 3.8 million vehicles sold in this category last year alone. BYD hopes that the Seagull will appeal to younger buyers and families looking for a second vehicle. The response to the Seagull has been overwhelmingly positive, with 10,000 units ordered within the first 24 hours of opening sales. BYD has set an ambitious target of selling 3 million vehicles this year and becoming China’s No.1 automaker.
