BYD is set to outshine its rivals with the introduction of the Yuan Up, a compact electric SUV positioned beneath the popular Atto 3 (also known as Yuan Plus).

Leaked images from the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, subsequently shared by CarNewsChina, offer a glimpse of the Yuan Up’s exterior. While it inherits the front and rear styling cues from the recently unveiled mid-sized Song L, its overall profile adopts a boxier silhouette reminiscent of the Smart #1.

As BYD’s smallest electric SUV, the Yuan Up measures 4310mm in length, 1830mm in width, and 1675mm in height, all resting on a 2620mm wheelbase. These dimensions place it in close competition with the MG ZS EV.

Buyers will have the option of two electric powertrains, delivering 70kW and 130kW, respectively. The vehicle’s weight varies between 1430kg and 1540kg depending on the chosen powertrain.

The smaller electric motor, featured in the base BYD Dolphin in Australia, is equipped with a 44.9kWh battery, providing a WLTP range of 340km. Despite its lower power output compared to competitors, the base Dolphin accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 12.3 seconds and weighs 1506kg. Notably, it rides on 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels, and though the interior details remain undisclosed, a panoramic sunroof is visible as an available feature.

Anticipated to offer a more economical option than BYD’s smallest electric SUV, the Yuan Pro, the Yuan Up’s pricing may position it favorably in the market. The Yuan Pro, priced between ¥95,800 and ¥113,800 (equivalent to A$20,472-$24,319) in China, is only marginally larger, measuring 4375mm in length, 1785mm in width, and 1680mm in height, with a 2535mm wheelbase.

The Yuan Pro, part of BYD’s Dynasty family of vehicles, debuted in 2015 as the BYD S1, underwent a renaming to Yuan in 2016, and further rebranded as Yuan Pro in 2021 following a facelift. Offering electric and previous petrol power options, it shares the Dynasty family with the Yuan Plus (Atto 3) and the new Song L crossover.
