Latest Update: 2024 BYD Tang released in January 2024, around the price range of $78,000.
BYD has deemed it high time to give its Tang electric SUV a European makeover. Despite only making its foray into the European market less than 12 months ago, BYD is upping the ante on the Tang by installing a more robust battery, a strategic move aimed at giving the ever-popular Tesla Model Y a run for its money.
Introduced in Norway in 2020, the Tang EV has since expanded its footprint to include Germany, the Netherlands, and various other European markets. At an initial asking price of €72,000 during pre-sales, the Tang EV is clearly positioning itself as a formidable player in the electric SUV arena. However, with the Tesla Model Y kicking off at €42,990 in Germany, the competition is stiff.
The dimensions of the Tang EV are quite imposing, measuring 4,870 mm in length, 1,950 mm in width, and 1,725 mm in height. While Tesla’s Model Y is 120 mm shorter, even the 534 hp Performance version starts at €55,990, making the Tang appear relatively pricey.
The Tesla Model Y achieved a historic feat as the best-selling car in Europe and globally last year, underscoring a significant milestone for electric vehicles. Nonetheless, BYD managed to outpace Tesla as the world’s leading EV manufacturer in the final quarter of 2023, setting the stage for heightened competition.
The standout upgrade for the Tang EV lies in its expanded battery capacity, jumping from 86 kWh to an impressive 108 kWh. This enhancement results in an additional 130 km of range on the WLTP cycle. Despite the already respectable 400 km range, the upgraded Tang can now cover up to 530 km on a single charge, as per BYD’s claims.
The battery overhaul is comprehensive, featuring an increased 11 kW AC charging capacity, a welcome upgrade from the previous 7 kW, along with a fast-charging capability of up to 190 kW DC. The 517 hp powertrain remains unaltered, boasting a swift 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in 4.9 seconds for a 2,489 kg SUV. However, customer feedback prompted upgrades to the suspension, with new active dampers promising a more composed and manageable ride.
Despite the considerable battery upgrade, the Tang’s range still falls short of the Model Y’s 565 km (WLTP). However, the Chinese SUV matches the Long Range version of Tesla’s SUV in speed. The sticking point remains the price, and while BYD has not officially disclosed any adjustments, the company intriguingly hints at a potential surprise. In challenging Tesla’s dominance, the upgraded Tang electric SUV, armed with a larger battery, extended range, enhanced charging capabilities, and commendable performance, may just have a shot at enticing customers, provided the price aligns with expectations.
