The 2024 Mini Electric Hardtop impresses with nimble handling, peppy acceleration, and a long list of standard features. On the downside, it has a shorter maximum driving range than most rivals, along with a firm ride and a cramped back row.If its short 110 miles of estimated driving range isn’t a deterrent for you, the 2024 Mini Cooper Electric is a go-kart-like EV that’s worth considering. Why? With a starting price of just over $30,000 (before any incentives), it’s one of the most inexpensive electric cars on the market. Its mini rear seat–pun intended–limits its people-hauling ability, but the interior enjoys the same quirky styling as the two-door Cooper hardtop that it’s based on. Everyone will notice the all-electric Cooper as you cruise silently down the street, but only the driver will notice the intrusive behavior of the traction-control system, which hinders any wheel-spinning antics (read: fun). Otherwise, the small hatchback’s battery pack provides a low center of gravity that enhances the Mini’s innate agility—something that will generate as many smiles as the 2024 Cooper EV’s adorable aesthetic. The all-electric Mini Cooper adds a special edition for the 2024 model year. Called the Resolute Edition, this appearance package brings Rebel Green paint with a white roof and mirror caps. It also features bronze stripes on the hood and bronze accents on the grille surround and other exterior trim pieces. The Resolute Edition rolls on 17-inch wheels. Inside are a set of sports seats up front, with yellow-and-cream tweed upholstery and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The 2024 Mini Cooper Electric starts at the same price as it did last year. That makes the base model a great value, offering plenty of standard features such as automatic dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, faux-leather upholstery, LED front lighting, hands-free passive entry, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.Yes, the 2024 Mini Electric Hardtop is a good electric car. The two-door Electric Hardtop stands out from the EV pack with unique styling, an abundance of standard tech and comfort features, and athletic handling. The electric Mini falls short when it comes to ride quality and drive range, though. It also has a small second row, and its retro-inspired style isn’t for everyone.TONS OF BRAND-NEW FEATURES FOR A REENERGIZED DRIVE.This iconic MINI Hardtop 4 Door has been refreshed with countless updates. We’re introducing brand new styles and technology no one has ever seen before. If range anxiety is an issue for you, the Chevrolet Bolt might be the best mainstream electric car option out there today. The Bolt’s maximum estimated driving range of 259 miles eclipses the Electric Hardtop’s EPA-estimated 114-mile maximum. The Bolt is also engaging to drive and has more horsepower and torque than the electric Mini, along with a larger rear cargo area. The Mini is more entertaining to drive and has a classier interior, but the Bolt is the more practical option. This choice comes down to what you prioritize in an EV.Every Mini Electric Hardtop comes with a 135-kW electric motor and a 28.9-kWh lithium-ion battery that combine to produce 181 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque. The motor comes paired with a single-speed automatic transmission. The front-wheel-drive Electric motor makes 181 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque, and sources power from a 28.9-kWh battery. When we sampled a prototype Mini Electric, we noted its zippy acceleration. Our most recent drive helped confirm our initial impressions, however, it also introduced us to an overzealous traction-control system that prevented us from chirping the front tires and mitigated some of the fun. Still, the Mini’s trademark go-kart handling impressed us. We also saw it sprint to 60 mph in a tidy 6.1 seconds, which makes it quicker than other small EVs such as the Chevy Bolt EV (6.7 clicks). The model features two regenerative-braking modes: one that allows the car to coast much like a non-EV car when you lift off the accelerator and another that’s more aggressive and almost eliminates the need to touch the brake pedal. The Mini Electric has an estimated driving range of 110 miles on a full charge, which is significantly shorter than what alternatives such as the Bolt EV and Nissan Leaf can cover. Mini says the car’s battery can be fast charged to 80 percent in 35 minutes. If you’re using home AC charging at 7.4 kilowatts, you can completely restore the battery in four hours. The little hatchback’s two-mode regenerative braking system also helps to maximize battery charge. The Electric Hardtop comes with a charging cable that’s compatible with 120- and 240-volt household-style power outlets. You can also opt to install a Level 2 charger in your home, which will charge your Mini more quickly, or you can use a public charging station. The classic Hardtop now comes with more standard premium exterior features. We reenergized this classic down to even the smallest detail. From new wheels to redesigned front and back grilles, and standard LED Headlights and Union Jack Tail lights to air curtains that give you a more aerodynamic drive – this MINI is looking fresh. An absolute highlight of our 2023 MINI Hardtop 4 Door is our all-new Multitone Roof. Now available in 3 different color gradients, Soul Blue, Alpine White, or Chili Red. You won’t see this on any other car because this is exclusive painting technology only a MINI can provide. The Electric’s interior features a 5.5-inch digital gauge cluster that displays the battery’s charge level, driving range, nav info, and other infotainment functions. Every Mini Electric has dual-zone climate control, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, and a unique heat-pump design that uses 75 percent less energy than a traditional electric heater when warming the passenger cabin. The introduction of ambient interior lighting, complete with six different colors, adds another funky dimension to the cabin. As with the gas-powered Mini Cooper, the back seat doesn’t offer much space, and cargo room is similarly limited.Mini Electric is expected to have a combined MPGe rating of 108. For comparison, the Bolt EV is rated at 118 MPGe combined and the Leaf is rated up to 111 MPGe combined. However, we won’t be able to confirm the Mini government estimate until we can test its real-world range on our 75-mph highway route, which is part of our extensive testing regimen. For more information about Mini Electric’s fuel economy, The motor’s near-instantaneous torque delivers quick acceleration from a standstill and propels the Mini from zero to 60 mph in about seven seconds. While you’ll lose some of that energy as you get up to highway speeds, this Mini can still hold its own while passing and merging. If you’re looking for a fun and quirky take on an electric car, the Electric Hardtop is worth a look thanks to its playful styling and agile handling.
