As we teeter on the brink of the electric revolution, the relentless battle of horsepower shows no signs of letting up. Porsche is currently in the throes of a mid-cycle facelift for its iconic Taycan, and rumor has it that this update will usher in a new, more powerful variant – Porsche’s long-awaited response to Tesla’s Model S Plaid. Tentatively bearing the “GT” moniker, this sizzling sedan has recently been spied at the hallowed Nürburgring, where it’s undergoing final testing before it gains entry into the exclusive 1,000-horsepower club.
Our sharp-eyed photographers gleaned some intriguing information from an insider at Porsche’s top-secret R&D center in Weissach, Germany. It’s confirmed that this prototype packs a four-digit horsepower punch, thanks to what we can only imagine is a robust tri-motor setup. It’s worth noting that the Taycan GT won’t be the first vehicle in the Volkswagen Group stable to feature three motors; the SQ8 E-Tron (formerly known as the E-Tron S) has been sporting this advanced tech since late 2020.
Comparing this fresh batch of spy shots to those we snapped back in June, it’s evident that the camouflage at the front has been completely stripped away. The new, more aggressive bumper flaunts a pronounced splitter adorned with hefty end plates. While there may still be some subtle concealment surrounding the headlights, it’s plausible that Porsche is using this to keep its new HD Matrix LED setup under wraps, a feature that made its debut earlier this year with the 2024 Cayenne.
A quick glance is all it takes to realize that this isn’t your run-of-the-mill Taycan. A colossal rear wing hovers above an integrated spoiler lip, making a bold statement about this sedan’s performance potential. Similar to the front, there appears to be some disguise around the taillights, though the changes are likely minor. Unfortunately, since our spies captured the prototype in motion, we couldn’t sneak a peek inside. However, it’s safe to assume that the full roll cage won’t be making its way into the production model, as such an extreme feature wouldn’t befit a road-legal sedan.
In its quest to rival the tri-motor Lucid Air Sapphire, Porsche has left no stone unturned. The prototype doesn’t shy away from showing off its enormous brakes, tucked behind newly designed black wheels that conspicuously lack the brand’s iconic crest. A closer examination of the side profile reveals a strip of duct tape concealing a wire that snakes into the cabin through the rear doors. Presumably, this wire connects a roof-mounted sensor to testing equipment positioned in the rear seats, all part of Porsche’s rigorous testing regimen.
