2024 Ford F-150 Lightning provides the modern, always-on work-ready truck police departments need to help lower costs, drive efficiency and accelerate customers’ sustainability goals

Ford has been providing police departments with the vehicles they need to protect and serve communities for more than 70 years. Currently, Ford Pro customers include more than 12,000 police departments across the country and its police vehicle lineup outsells all other police vehicles combined1. The company attributes this success and customer loyalty to the automaker’s close collaboration with its customers, specifically the Ford Police Advisory Board.
As the name suggests, the truck is based on the F-150 Lightning’s Pro commercial version and forms part of Ford’s own SSV (Special Service Vehicle) program that equips regular Ford vehicles with the basic equipment needed for police services and other law enforcement agencies. The regular F-150 is already part of the program, along with the Expedition SUV and Transit van. Ford’s announcement, however, comes after some law enforcement agencies scaled back on vehicle purchases due to budget cuts during the coronavirus pandemic and amid activist backlash from the Black Lives Matter movement.
“We are seeing a lot of interest in electric vehicles from police agencies since launching Mach-E,” the company said in an emailed statement. “F-150 Lightning Pro Special Service Vehicle marks the next step in our efforts to serve law enforcement into an electric future.”
Ford also offers the more specialized F-150 Police Responder for police duty, and the new F-150 Lightning Pro SSV is essentially a blend of that truck and the SSV version. Key updates include seats lined in heavy-duty cloth and featuring reduced bolsters to help holstered officers easily get in and out of the vehicle quickly and without fuss. There are also steel intrusion plates in the front seatbacks and a reinforced center console designed to be fitted with police equipment. Police departments have always been a reliable and lucrative customer base for the Dearborn, Michigan, based car group – cop utility vehicles provide stable profits and free visibility. Ford’s announcement, however, comes after some law enforcement agencies scaled back on vehicle purchases due to budget cuts during the coronavirus pandemic and amid activist backlash from the Black Lives Matter movement.

The F-150 Lightning Pro SSV is designed to handle specialized departmental needs outside of pursuit situations, such as assisting at an accident or crime scene or giving departments the ability to tow a boat or trailer. Purpose-built features from F-150 Police Responder® include:

To lure public agencies, municipalities, and police departments into purchasing fleets of its new EVs, Ford is offering “flexible financing options” as well as making it easier for them to install charging stations to assist in their transition to electrified fleets. Rather than handle pursuit duties, where the range is essential, the F-150 Lightning Pro SSV has been designed to handle other common police actions, according to Ford. Actions mentioned by the automaker include assisting at an accident or crime scene or providing departments with towing capabilities.
The vehicle also comes with all of the features of the F-150 Lightning Pro on which it is based, including 12-inch screens for the instrument cluster and infotainment hub, a frunk with power outlets, and a dual-motor electric drive system rated at 452 hp and 775 lb-ft of torque with the standard battery and 580 hp and 775 lb-ft with the extended-range battery. The latter means 0-60 mph acceleration in less than four seconds, making this the quickest police vehicle offered by Ford. Range figures weren’t mentioned but the EPA rates the regular F-150 Lightning with the standard battery at 230 miles of range and the extended battery at 320 miles.
This is the second electric police vehicle from Ford. The automaker also offers a Mustang Mach-E police vehicle, examples of which have been operating in the New York Police Department fleet since this summer. To lure public agencies, municipalities, and police departments into purchasing fleets of its new EVs, Ford is offering “flexible financing options” as well as making it easier for them to install charging stations to assist in their transition to electrified fleets. Ford has been developing an electric F-Series truck since 2019, trying to revolutionize a line that has brought in more than $40 billion in revenue annually. The decision to electrify the trucks came at a time when there was growing pressure to compete with Tesla and when other car makers made pledges to electrify their fleets.
