Although the Acura TLX isn’t quite a Japanese BMW 3-series, it’s still a no-fuss sports sedan with well-coordinated moves, good braking, a modicum of steering feel, and a handsomely appointed cabin. A 272-hp turbocharged inline-four powers the standard TLX; front-wheel drive is standard while all-wheel drive is available. The fully loaded TLX Type S employs a spunky 355-hp twin-turbo V-6 and comes standard with all-wheel drive. Both engines bolt to a 10-speed automatic. While the TLX is a bit portly for the segment, it feels light on its feet. Exterior PMC details include a Berlina Black roof, antenna, door handles, and exhaust tips. Copper-colored 20-inch lightweight wheels also inspired by the NSX are exclusive to this model. And there’s some carbon fiber too: the TLX Type S PMC Edition a decklid spoiler, rear diffuser, and interior trim pieces made of the expensive material. TLX has an expressive design that highlights its sporty character. These include attractive analog gauges and a prominent rotary drive-mode selector in the middle of the dashboard. Solidified by Acura’s excellent build quality, the TLX also boasts nicer cabin materials than its predecessor, including open-pore wood and real aluminum. Although the sedan feels spacious from side to side, the back seat feels smaller than some competitors in this class. Still, its highly adjustable front seats and excellent forward visibility reward drivers. The TLX also offers myriad interior colors, distinct leather upholstery, and desirable features. All three colors are from the NSX catalog. Acura raids the TLX’s accessories list for the interior. A flat-bottom heated steering wheel, carbon-fiber interior veneers, illuminated side sills, and floor mats are all included but are otherwise available on other TLDs. The unique upgrade for the cabin is the numbered plaque located between the volume knob and cupholders. Then, of course, there’s the exclusivity that comes with knowing your TLX is one of the few to be finished by the same hands that assembled the NSX.
Acura isn’t saying how many TLX Type S PMC Edition models it’ll build, but the RDX PMC Edition was also billed as a special edition, and that vehicle is now in its second year of production. We also don’t know how much of a premium the PMC Edition trim will command over the price of a TLX Type S, but based on the RDX pricing structure, the bump will be modest considering all the extra stuff you get. If that logic bears out, we think it’s worth upgrading to the PMC if you want a capable sports sedan with a unique flair. Long Beach Blue Pearl vehicles get Orchid upholstery with blue stitching. The 130R White exterior pairs with a Red interior.
All of the models have seats with Milano leather upholstery and Ultrasuede inserts. Drivers grip a flat-bottom, heated steering wheel. The cabin has carbon-fiber trim panels and illuminated side sills. The floor mats have the Type S badge on them. A numbered serial plaque is on the center console.
The PMC Edition cars go through the same quality control process as the NSX. The builders put each vehicle on the dyno, do a detailed paint inspection, and perform a rough-road simulation. These vehicles also go through a special delivery process. To protect the paint, they wear a specially designed cover. Plus, transportation to the dealer happens in an enclosed, single-car carrier. The TLX Type S is the sportiest Acura sedan in years and it’s getting even more special thanks to a limited PMC Edition. Set to go up for order later this year, the 2023 TLX Type S PMC Edition will be “handcrafted by the same master technicians who build the NSX Type S at the Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio.”However, that’s only part of what makes the PMC Edition so unique as the car will be offered in one of three NSX-derived colors known Curva Red, 130R White, and Long Beach Blue. The special touches don’t end there as the sedan features contrasting Berlina Black paint on the roof, antenna, and door handles. Rounding out the exterior highlights are a black chrome four-tailpipe exhaust system and 20-inch lightweight wheels that feature a Y-spoke design as well as a copper finish, which is a first for Acura. They’re joined by gloss black badging, a carbon fiber spoiler, and a carbon fiber rear diffuser.
The carbon fiber theme continues in the cabin and the lightweight material is joined by Milano leather seats with Ultrasuede inserts. Other highlights include an individually numbered plaque, illuminated sill plates, and special floor mats with colored accent binding.
