Aston Martin is currently considering the development of a stripped-back version of its DBX SUV, which would be lighter in weight. Although the luxury British car manufacturer has not yet confirmed plans for such a model, Andy Tokley, Aston Martin’s senior vehicle engineering manager, revealed that the idea of a lighter DBX has been considered since the beginning of the project.

Tokley explained that it would be relatively simple to reduce the weight of the SUV by eliminating some non-essential features, such as replacing the rear bench with two individual seats and removing the standard glass roof and electric power blind, which could reduce the weight by 55 pounds (25 kilograms) on the top end of the car.

Interestingly, the roof load on the DBX currently accounts for 220 pounds (100 kilograms), which affects the tuning of the electronic stability program (ESP), as it always assumes there is weight on the roof. By removing this weight, Aston Martin could enhance the car’s ESP tuning and overall performance.

According to Tokley, the body structure of the DBX is modular, which would make it possible to adjust the platform’s length and height without having to re-engineer the vehicle’s underpinnings. This would allow Aston Martin to develop a stripped-back version of the SUV easily.

A lighter DBX would likely appeal to customers who want a high-performance SUV with a sportier edge. In addition, it would enable Aston Martin to compete with the Lamborghini Urus Performante, potentially expanding its customer base and solidifying its reputation as a luxury automaker capable of building high-performance vehicles.

It is worth noting that the DBX707, the hottest member of the DBX range, is powered by the same 4.0-liter V8 engine, but it has been uprated to produce up to 697 horsepower and 663 pound-feet (900 Newton-meters) of torque. Moreover, the company has recently introduced an inline six-cylinder variant of the DBX for the Chinese market.
