Few cars blend beauty and driver delight like the 2023 Aston Martin Vantage. In both coupe and convertible form, it casts a striking silhouette in its couture-inspired suit of impeccably pressed sheet metal. Most models are powered by a twin-turbo V-8 making more than 500 horsepower, while a lucky few buyers will wind up with an even more powerful twin-turbo V-12. No matter the powertrain, the Vantage impresses with an athletic chassis, lively handling, and explosive acceleration—not to mention some of the most melodic exhaust notes available today. The interior is snug and can be customized with several high-end options, though we have one complaint: a relative lack of luxury for the Vantage’s six-figure price tag. Still, with styling this sleek and moves this exciting, the Vantage is a highly desirable driver’s car with an iconic heritage. Throughout Aston Martin’s history, the luxury British brand has offered V12 power with roofless motoring. The vehicle you see here, however, represents something new. This is a Vantage Roadster, but for the first time, you can get it with the boosted V12 engine. As such, say hello to the (big breath) 2023 Aston Martin V12 Vantage Roadster.
It’s a big name, but there’s big power to back it up. It makes use of the same twin-turbocharged 5.2-liter 12-pot from the hardtop V12 Vantage, and we’re happy to say that nothing is lost in the transition to convertible. It still pumps out 690 horsepower (515 kW), handled by an eight-speed automatic transmission mounted at the rear of the car. It still sprints to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds, and provided your hair can stand the breeze, it will still reach a top speed of 200 mph. Aston Martin is wrapping up development on the convertible version of the V12 Vantage, and during some testing at the infamous Nurburgring racetrack, our spy photographers captured the car almost completely undisguised.
Other than the retractable soft top, the car looks to be nearly identical to its coupe sibling, keeping the same visual upgrades over the V8 Vantage. What does Aston Martin do differently on the V12 Vantage Roadster, aside from installing a convertible roof? The company isn’t forthcoming with details, save for a bespoke tune on the Roadster’s adaptive dampers. As the images clearly show, the drop-top also lacks the big rear wing used on the solid-roof model. However, should a Roadster buyer want it, the wing is available as an option.
The rest comes through as standard-issue V12 Vantage, though there’s nothing standard about such a vehicle. Body panels in front are made from carbon fiber, as are the side sills. At the back, the deck lid and rear fascia are made of lightweight composite material. It shares the widebody stance of the hard top, which is 1.6-inches wider than the V8-powered Vantage. The Roadster stops courtesy of aggressive ceramic brakes with six-piston calipers in front and four-piston grippers at the back. They sit behind 21-inch wheels wearing sticky Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires A V-12 engine returns to the Vantage lineup for 2023 and it’s a whopper of a powerplant featuring twin-turbocharging and 690 horsepower. The twin-turbo V-12 will be offered in both the coupe and convertible Vantage models, along with a special aerodynamics package for greater downforce. Aston claims a 3.4-second zero-to-60-mph time, which may be conservative. Unfortunately, the order book for this exclusive model is already closed, and only 333 will be produced. Such upgrades include a wider body, a reworked front bumper with side air curtains and a deeper front splitter, a large central hood vent, front fender vents that flow down into extended side skirts, a massive rear wing, and a retooled rear bumper with brake ducts, a larger diffuser, and dual center-mounted exhaust tips. It’s also worth noting that this car’s wheels are different than the coupe’s, but they could just be a set used for testing.
The curb weight for the V12 Vantage Roadster will likely be increased over the coupe due to the added weight of the convertible top and any extra chassis bracing needed to make up for the structural rigidity lost from chopping the roof off. It’s unclear whether or not Aston Martin has put the car on a diet to compensate for that extra weight, but if they did, we’d be impressed, as they’ve already employed extensive weight savings to get the coupe to be only 476 lbs (216 kg) heavier than its V8 counterpart. Aston Martin unveiled a new generation of its V12 Vantage in March, and sadly the car has been confirmed as the last of its kind.
Aston Martin said at the time that just 333 examples would be built. What the automaker didn’t say, however, was that a V12 Vantage Roadster was also planned, with the reveal of the open-top car taking place late on Friday during Aston Martin’s Club 1913 exhibit at 2022 Monterey Car Week. It was presented alongside the DBR22, a sultry speedster developed by the Q by the Aston Martin personalization department.
The V12 Vantage, which in roadster form is limited to 249 units, is designed to go up against extreme track-focused cars like the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Black Series and Porsche 911 GT2 RS, and a roadster body style holds a unique proposition in that set.
Another solution for the added weight could be to try and squeeze some extra power out of the twin-turbo 5.2L V12, but it seems unlikely. That being said, with 690 hp (700 PS / 515 kW) and 555 lb-ft (753 Nm) of torque already on tap, we don’t think many people would be complaining about a lack of speed, especially since that power enables the coupe to sprint from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 3.4 seconds on its way to a top speed of 200 mph (322 km/h).
The V12 Vantage Roadster will likely make its public debut within the coming days at Monterey Car Week, and it will almost certainly be another limited-run special like the coupe. Exactly how many units will be produced is unknown, though we wouldn’t be surprised if it was similar to the coupe’s 333 examples. The V12 Vantage brings to the fight a twin-turbo 5.2-liter V-12 that delivers a peak of 690 hp and 555 lb-ft of torque. Those are the same figures the engine delivers in 2020’s V12 Speedster special edition, a car that shares much in common with the V12 Vantage, and they help deliver a 0-60 mph time of 3.4 seconds (3.5 seconds for the roadster) and a top speed of 200 mph.
There’s also a host of chassis and aerodynamic mods to go with the beefed-up powertrain, with many of the settings unique to the roadster. The list includes new dampers, anti-roll bars, bushings, spring rates, body reinforcements, a mechanical limited-slip differential, and a widened track. There’s also no missing the huge rear wing, which helps the car deliver a maximum of 476 lb of downforce. On the coupe, the wing is standard but can be deleted. On the roadster, the wing is offered as an available extra.

The cockpit is snug for two, but it’s lined with leather and faux suede. Likewise, sports seats with power adjustments and memory settings are standard. Still, its luxury experience is diminished by poor noise isolation on the highway. Interior cubby storage is also scarce except for a shallow center-console bin and door pockets. The convertible’s power-operated fabric roof folds up and down quickly and features a Z shape that Aston says helps save trunk space. While the Vantage Roadster has a slightly smaller trunk than the coupe, we’re told that it’s still able to fit a full-sized golf bag. Unfortunately for the masses, there will be only 249 such customers. That’s all the Roadsters Aston Martin will build, but even if you have the funds to get one, you’re too late because each is already sold. For those select buyers, production begins in the third quarter of 2022 with deliveries commencing by the end of the year.
