For the first time in more than three decades, production of the Buick Electra nameplate will resume. A new batch of spy shots confirms that an electric crossover is definitely in the works, though exactly how it will look remains a mystery.

Doubts were raised about an Electra reboot back in 2020 with the presentation of an Electra-badged idea vehicle. After that, GM registered a trademark for the Electra name in North America. In summer 2022, a second Electra concept called the Electra-X came out. In November, a number of GM trademarks for the Electra E1 through E9 surfaced, indicating the possibility of an entire sub-brand for the Electra.

This brings us to the pictures above, which depict a prototype that resembles the Electra-X concept and is heavily camouflaged. Similar to the concept, the back roof has a low roofline that arcs upward. On the concept, placeholder headlights are visible at the front, but they appear to take up space for slim headlights. The taillights are clearly marked on the back, but the lenses appear to share space and have a shape that is consistent with the concept, just like on the front.

Because it is an electric vehicle, the exhaust system is not visible. It will make use of the LG Chem-developed GM Ultium platform’s battery technology. It is believed that a single-motor RWD layout is the standard, with a dual-motor AWD system being an option. According to our sources, this will be called the Electra E4, and it will be sold in China and North America.

The Electra name has already been confirmed in China, but this is not the E4. China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recently posted pictures of the Electra E5, which show an electric vehicle with proportions and design similar to the new Encore GX. It’s possible that an Electra E4 could be used as a crossover version of the E5, similar to a coupe.

When the Electra E4 will make its official debut is unknown. We’d say sometime in the second half of 2023, at the very least.
