We are not referring to the electric version of the new Chevrolet Equinox. New spy shots provide a glimpse of the upcoming combustion-powered SUV, which is expected to be available for the 2024 model year.

The fact that the fuel-burning model will not simply be a copy of the Equinox EV, which debuted earlier in 2022, is immediately apparent. The body has the same window shape and beltline as the Equinox, but its boxy proportions make it beefier than before. This is especially evident at the D-pillar, where, similar to the Equinox EV, the side glass extends almost vertically to the roof. The current Equinox has angled glass, giving it a more modern appearance.

We also draw your attention to the front, where the camouflage barely lets a straight face through. With its thin daytime running lights at the top, this model shows a little more Equinox EV influence. There is a substantial grille to feed a gasoline engine, in contrast to the EV. On either side of the grille, you can easily see the primary headlights. At the rear, placeholder taillights show that this test vehicle is far from ready for production.

It’s clear that Chevrolet is following the recent trend of SUVs that are boxier and more robust, like the new Honda Pilot and Subaru Forester, which came out in the last 18 months. As a result, Chevy’s lineup can accommodate the sleeker Equinox EV as a family hauler with a focus on the street.

Our sources have not been informed of any engine selections regarding power. At the moment, every Equinox trim level comes with a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 175 horsepower and can turn either the front wheels or all four of them. The introduction of new hybrid powertrains is always a possibility.
