Citroen has recently revealed its newest electric vehicle, the eC3, however it will only be available in India. Despite being marketed as an SUV by Citroen, the eC3 is actually a compact hatchback with a slightly elevated suspension and additional body cladding for a more rugged appearance.
The eC3 bears a strong resemblance to its gasoline counterparts, with the only distinguishable feature being the absence of a tailpipe. The car features minimal design cues such as small blue “e” badges, suggesting that either Citroen had a limited budget for design changes or that the company doesn’t want to heavily emphasize the fact that the eC3 is electric. Some may argue that this is for the better as it allows the car to blend in as just another vehicle on the road, without the need for excessive branding or design changes.
The similarities between the eC3 and its gasoline counterparts extend to the interior as well. The only major difference is the new drive selector. The eC3 is offered in two trims: Live and Feel. The Live trim comes with four body colors to choose from, high-efficiency air conditioning, and a roof antenna for infotainment. The Feel trim adds two roof colors and two dashboard colors, as well as a 12″ infotainment screen with support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Both trims also feature the same roof antenna.
In terms of safety, the eC3 comes with just two airbags. The rest of the safety features are left to the driver and the local driving conditions. Given that India can be challenging to drive in, the lack of even basic features such as a radio in the entry-level Live trim may be considered a safety feature as it requires the driver to pay more attention to the road.
The eC3 is equipped with a single electric motor that produces 57 horsepower (43 kW) and 143 Nm of torque. The power is sent to the front wheels only. The car can accelerate from 0 to 60 km/h (37 mph) in 6.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 107 km/h (67 mph).
The eC3 is designed specifically for the Indian market, with an emphasis on practicality and affordability. The range of 320 km (as per Indian ARAI cycle) is more important than top speed for Indian drivers. The car can be recharged at home using its built-in 3.3 kW charger in just over 10 hours, and the 29.2 kWh battery can be charged up to 80% at a DC fast-charging station in under an hour.
The first units of the eC3 are set to be available at showrooms across India next month. The pricing of the eC3 is keenly set to attract buyers away from Tata’s first electric car, the Tiago.ev.
The eC3 is a great small electric car, it’s basic but it makes a lot of sense as a city car or a small run-around. With a little less power it could be used in some European countries without the need for a driving license, and it could compete easily with Dacia Spring. In fact, it might be the vehicle that makes Dacia look posh.
