Latest Update: 2024 Daihatsu Vision Copen Concept revealed in October 2023.
Indulging in the allure of the forbidden fruit has always been an automotive pleasure, and the Daihatsu Copen is a prime example of this delightful temptation. A pint-sized fun car, still attainable in the land of the rising sun, Japan. The second-generation Copen, which made its debut in 2014, has since sprouted various iterations, including a fixed-roof coupe, a sporty GR variant, and a charmingly retro Cero model. However, the forthcoming Vision concept set to grace the 2023 Japan Mobility Show later this month promises to be a Copen like no other, despite its familiar design roots.
First and foremost, this Vision concept car is substantially larger than its namesake production model. The standard Copen, classified as a kei car, adheres to certain size constraints. Clocking in at just 133.7 inches in length and 58.1 inches in width, the regular Copen is a compact marvel. In contrast, the Vision concept stretches out to a noteworthy 151 inches in length and 66.7 inches in width. While it maintains a slightly lower stance at 49.8 inches compared to the kei car’s 50.4 inches, it boasts a significantly longer wheelbase, measuring 95 inches versus the kei car’s 87.8-inch axle span.
Remarkably, the Copen has evolved to nearly match the dimensions of a Mazda Miata. Much like the MX-5 – which saw an update in Japan recently with the ND3 version – the Vision Copen adopts a rear-wheel-drive layout. To refresh your memory, the kei car typically routes power to the front wheels. Speaking of power, the Vision Copen presumably packs a more robust punch, having traded in the turbocharged 0.6-liter, three-cylinder engine for a heartier 1.3-liter unit. With a displacement more than doubling, it’s safe to assume that its output has surged far beyond the kei car’s modest 63 hp and 68 lb-ft.
One slightly disappointing departure from the standard model is the Vision Copen’s apparent shift to an automatic transmission, replacing the manual gearbox option. The standard model also offers a continuously variable transmission (CVT). According to Daihatsu’s press release, the internal combustion engine has been adapted to run on CN fuel, likely referring to carbon-neutral fuel.
Despite its growth spurt, the Vision Copen’s design retains a sense of familiarity. Unfortunately, the roof is concealed for now, but Daihatsu assures us that the car has been designed to mimic the Active Top of the first-generation model. This entails an electrically retractable hardtop, suggesting that the car may still offer some practicality even with the roof stowed away. Inside the cabin, you’ll find a digital instrument cluster, a relatively compact infotainment system, Porsche-style capacitive-touch buttons, and door loops, all contributing to its unique charm.
