In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ford brought electrifying excitement to the drag racing world with the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400. This prototype drag-racing machine boasted dual motors and an impressive power output that drove the rear wheels, despite being labeled as 1400, it generated 1,502 horsepower. Notably, it set an NHRA record for a full-bodied EV drag car, clocking 8.128 seconds at 171.97 mph.

Fast forward to now, and Ford has raised the bar yet again with the Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800. While this is an upgraded version of the original car, it won’t be seen competing at the strip. However, Ford will attempt to break its own record in the near future, and with the Super Cobra Jet now generating 1,800 horsepower, it’s highly likely the old record will be shattered.

So, what sets the Super Cobra Jet 1800 apart from the original EV? Just as the classic V8 Cobra Jet engines of the 1960s were upgraded to become Super Cobra Jets, the same principle applies here. The dual DS-250-115 electric motors still power only the rear wheels, which are fitted with full-on drag slicks, and they are coupled with four PN-250-DZR inverters. The battery system has been revamped, although details about its size or output remain unknown, we do know it’s now lighter and has been “entirely redone.” A new transmission has also been installed, although again, specifics have not been provided.

Beyond that, Ford has also made changes to the Mustang’s chassis and its proprietary control software. The overall weight of the vehicle has been reduced by hundreds of pounds. As an upgrade of the 2020 model, it still retains the previous-generation Mustang’s body and does not have the new seventh-gen pony.

The Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800 was developed in collaboration with Ford Performance, MLe Racecars, AEM-EV, Watson Engineering, and Cascadia Motion. Later this year, when it hits the drag strip, Ford will aim to set a new world record for the fastest standing quarter-mile of a full-bodied EV, currently held by the Cobra Jet 1400 at 8.128 seconds. Additionally, the automaker will also attempt world records for the fastest two-wheel-drive and overall EV to 60 mph.
