Hyundai’s rich heritage takes center stage at this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, as the legendary Pony Coupe Concept makes a triumphant return to Italy after nearly four decades since its debut at the Turin Motor Show. The brainchild of renowned designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, who also played a pivotal role in its restoration, the Pony Coupe will grace the shores of Lake Como on Saturday, May 20, captivating automotive enthusiasts at this esteemed event.
The Resurrection of an Iconic Myth
Although the Pony Coupe Concept we celebrate today differs from Hyundai’s first-ever mass-produced vehicle, it exudes the spirit and essence that defined the brand’s early years. The original Pony, introduced in 1975 during a tumultuous global economic crisis, emerged as a modest four-door liftback. However, its coupe counterpart, unveiled a year earlier in 1974, left a lasting impression on Hyundai’s design philosophy, influencing subsequent models and shaping the company’s aesthetic direction.
The second-generation Pony, known as the Excel, adopted a more angular form with its compact four-door layout. Later, the Hyundai Scoupe paid homage to the Coupe Concept by incorporating its sleek silhouette into a sporty car design, albeit with softer lines and curves.

The sports car presented at Villa d’Este boasts a sleek and stylish layout, showcasing a unique blend of retro-futuristic elements. Non-traditional gauges and a single-spoke steering wheel evoke the spirit of the 1970s while exuding a distinctively modern ambiance that still captivates today.
The reintroduction of the Pony Coupe Concept through the N Vision 74 ignites the imagination of both automotive enthusiasts and Hyundai’s visionary designers, like SangYup Lee, the deserving recipient of the prestigious 2023 World Car Person of the Year award.
