Using the same tech as the Air, the 2023 Gravity is expected to take everything the Air offers and add a higher seating position, a more spacious cabin, SUV styling, and yes, probably a higher price, too. Here’s what we expect for the 2023 Gravity Lucid has confirmed that the follow-up to its Air electric sedan is on track to be ready to launch by late 2023. The Gravity crossover is based on the same Lucid Electric Advanced Platform (LEAP) platform as the Air, not surprisingly. The company says that range for the new model should reach beyond 400 miles, which translates roughly to something above 650 km.In any event, the Gravity will stand out on the premium electric SUV landscape with its offer of a 1,080-hp powertrain, generated by twin electric motors (an optional third motor will up the output to 1,300 hp).The second Air model is still two years away, but Air already has its sights on other additions to its budding lineup. Last year there was speculation that an electric pickup was in the works. Now, talk is also of a second platform in development, which would allow the company to produce a range of more-affordable EVs. Lucid’s Space Concept approach maximizes interior space by cleverly packaging the miniaturized, yet powerful Lucid electric drivetrain. With room for up to seven full-size passengers, Project Gravity resets the bar for the class of luxury SUVs, delivering the benefits of electrification to wide open spaces everywhere. Lucid Motors wants to build a new kind of car that makes no compromises. Here’s everything you need to know about the Lucid Gravity, which is aimed at raising the bar for electric SUVs: Several startups have launched EVs in an attempt to disrupt the transportation market, but the 2023 Lucid Air luxury sedan is one of the few so far that’s made a notable impact. Its big battery and compact motors—both designed in-house—allow it to deliver unbeatable range and great performance. The Grand Touring Performance model can jump to 60 mph in just 2.6 seconds or, when driven sedately, can sail on for 516 miles—its estimated driving range, according to the EPA. That’s enough range to get from Boston to Baltimore with electrons left over. More important, it’s more range than any other EV currently offers. The new Sapphire model is even quicker, with a claimed 60 mph time of under 2.0 seconds. The Air’s stylish exterior and spacious cabin add to its desirability, but its price tag had us expecting to find plusher materials inside.
Almost all of the car’s controls are accessed through one of several display screens that dot the cabin, a reminder of Lucid’s Silicon Valley roots, and the software interface in the early cars is still a work in progress. Otherwise, the luxury four-door’s performance, driving range, and general snazziness make it a viable competitor for high-dollar EVs such as the Porsche Taycan and Mercedes-Benz EQS, as well as that other high-impact EV disruptor, the Tesla Model S.We’d steer towards the Touring model. It offers plenty to like and costs significantly less than the Grand Touring trim. The Touring offers 20-inch wheels, leather upholstery, in-dash navigation, and 406 miles of estimated driving range per charge. All Lucid models come standard with three years of complimentary charging via the Electrify America charging network. The fanciest Dream Edition models are officially sold out, but if you want to maximize your luxury—and your out of pocket cost—the Grand Touring trim offers much of the Dream’s panache.
The entry-level Gravity features a single electric motor that drives the rear wheels and produces 480 horsepower. Other models dual electric motors that provide all-wheel drive and a variety of horsepower ratings: The Touring model generates 620 horses, the Grand Touring makes 1050. An initial run of limited edition cars, called the Dream Edition and Dream Edition Performance, were good for 933 horsepower and 1111 horsepower, respectively. Now that we’ve driven a Dream Edition, we can report that it’s crazy quick and surprisingly agile for its size. At our test track, it bolted to 60 mph in just 2.6 seconds. Despite riding on conventional steel coil springs rather than Gravity springs, the sedan felt calm and smooth in the appropriately named Smooth drive mode. Our main complaint was with our example’s 21-inch wheels on low-profile performance tires that produced notable road noise on a section of coarse pavement. We’ve also sampled the Grand Touring and Grand Touring Performance trims, and the former delivered a brisk 3.0-second zero-to-60-mph time, a feat that’s easily repeated by using the car’s launch mode. The new top dog is the 1200-plus-horsepower Lucid Gravity Sapphire, which has three electric motors. The additional motor is mounted at the rear and claims to provide insane acceleration performance in order to compete with the Tesla Model S Plaid. Lucid also claims a top speed of 200 mph. The Gravity has the longest range of any electric vehicle currently on the market, according to EPA estimates. The Dream Edition Range model should go for 520 miles on a single charge, while the Dream Edition Performance should travel about 471 miles. The base Pure and mid-range Touring trims each have an estimated driving range of 406 miles; the Grand Touring and Grand Touring Performance models offer up to 516 and 446 miles of range, respectively. On our 75-mph highway fuel economy route the Grand Touring’s range was an observed 410 miles, making it the longest range EV we’ve ever tested. The Gravity features a 112.0-kWh battery pack and DC fast-charging capability. Plugged into a fast charger, the sedan is said to be able to recoup 300 miles of range in 21 minutes. New owners will also enjoy three years of free fast-charging at Electrify America charging stations. There’s no cap on how many times owners can charge their cars, as long as it’s used for personal and not commercial purposes. The most efficient Gravity is rated at 131 MPGe combined, and the Performance version is rated at 111 MPGe combined. During our test drive, however, we recorded only 82 MPGe. For more information about the Air’s efficiency, visit the Make no mistake, the Gravity is intended to be a luxury car, and its handsome interior is fitted with rich-looking materials and cutting-edge technology. Lucid is especially proud of the sedan’s expansive passenger space, which is highlighted by a large back seat. While the standard rear seating is said to be comfortable for up to three adults, there’s also an optional Executive Rear Seating option that adds a recline function for ultimate comfort. The Air’s glass roof that makes it feel even airier and helps outward visibility. The sedan’s front center console looks to provide generous storage space behind the retractable lower touchscreen and inside the large center-console bin, which houses a set of cupholders as well as slots to place a smartphone. We’re also told its front trunk—or frunk—will have 10 cubic feet of volume. The Lucid Electric Advanced Platform (LEAP) – developed for use across Lucid’s model range – miniaturizes every component in the Lucid’s powertrain while simultaneously setting new performance standards and liberates space for passengers and cargo. It’s the perfect platform to build the world’s most versatile electric SUV.Lucid’s VP of design Derek Jenkins took pains to explain the vehicle’s precise mission when speaking with Automotive News, saying that consumers should not expect a rough-and-ready all-terrain roamer, a “rock-crawler” in the executive’s words. Rather, the Lucid Gravity is designed more as a suburban luxury crossover that runs purely on electric energy. It will display “strength and robustness” and feature “respectable ground clearance”, according to Jenkins, but it’s nonetheless designed mainly for use on paved environments. Forget what you know when it comes to any SUV that has come before. With amazing long-range electric driving and previously unimaginable performance as well as category redefining interior space, Lucid elevates the SUV to a new level. Just as Lucid Gravity has reimagined the luxury sedan, Project Gravity will redefine the luxury SUV.
