The 2023 Grecale Trofoe will be the second SUV to grace the Italian automaker’s showrooms, part of Maserati’s mission to broaden its lineup. The company’s new compact luxury crossover slots beneath the larger, mid-size Levante. As with the new MC20 supercar, the Grecale’s face features a distinctive Maserati grille but the rest of its bulbous body typifies a class that includes competitors such as the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, the BMW X3, and the Porsche Macan. The 2023 Grecale Trofeo comes standard with all-wheel drive and a 296-hp turbo-four. A 325-hp version of that engine is also available, and the top-of-the-line Trofeo offers maximum performance with a 523-hp twin-turbo V-6. An all-electric Maserati Grecale Folgore (reviewed separately) will join the lineup next year. The Grecale was first teased back in 2020 during the reveal presentation of the MC20. Now— finally—after we glimpsed a prototype version and were shown even more teaser images, Maserati’s second SUV has been officially revealed.
The Grecale Trofeo has a solid selection of powertrains. Every engine pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The standard mill is a 296-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder; a high-output version of that engine with 325 horses is also available on the Modena trim level. During our initial test drive, we noticed some turbo lag from the high-output four-cylinder engine but otherwise praised the powertrain for its perky acceleration and generous power. The ride is forgiving in Grecale’s sportier drive modes and with the Comfort, the mode selected is downright pillowy. Handling is fairly neutral and the Grecale’s athleticism is easy to exploit, but the Porsche Macan still provides more driving pleasure. The Trofeo represents the pinnacle of the lineup’s performance courtesy of a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 that’s a detuned version of the MC20’s engine. In the Grecale Trofeo, it makes 523 horsepower and 457 pound-feet of torque. Maserati says that will propel it from zero to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds en route to a 177-mph top speed. The Trofeo also comes standard with adaptive dampers and an air suspension, which are optional on the four-cylinder models.Grecale’s fuel economy estimates have not yet been released by the EPA, but we are expecting similar efficiency to the SUV’s luxury rivals such as the BMW X3, Lexus RX350, and Mercedes-Benz GLC-class. When we get a chance, we’ll put the Grecale through its paces on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test route and report its results here.
Along with rich materials throughout the cabin, the dash includes a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and pair of touchscreens on the center stack. The upper unit measures 12.3 inches and handles the infotainment system while the 8.8-inch lower screen contains HVAC and other controls. A three-zone climate system, as well as a head-up display, are optional. Passengers should have enough space to be comfortable as long as those in the back aren’t too tall or riding three-across. The Grecale’s cargo area offers up to 20 cubic feet of space, and Maserati says the area behind the power-folding rear seats features a flat load floor with a storage compartment underneath. The Grecale’s Google-based infotainment system primarily runs through a 12.3-inch touchscreen, but there’s another 8.8-inch touchscreen below that controls other functions. Every model comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; a Wi-Fi hotspot is available with a subscription. Grecale’s infotainment system also works with voice-command services like Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. The SUV’s audio system can also be upgraded to a 21-speaker, 1285-watt Sonus Faber stereo. We expect the compact ute to have an array of standard and optional driver-assistance technology.
Key safety features should include: Maserati provides a competitive limited and powertrain warranty, compared with other luxury brands that compete in this space. However, unlike BMW and Jaguar, the company doesn’t provide any complimentary scheduled maintenance.Even a brand like Maserati isn’t immune from the SUV and crossover trend. The Italian luxury automaker, whose lineup was primarily dominated by sports sedans and grand tourers, now has two SUVs in its lineup. Enter the Maserati Grecale, which is their smallest SUV yet.The MC20’s V6 and spacious cabin make the Grecale attractive.Liberated from a tempestuous, dysfunctional relationship with the Prancing Horse crew, Maserati launched its self-developed carbon-fiber MC20 supercar last year. Now, here comes the follow-up. The 2023 Grecale Trofeo crossover features a modified version of the MC20’s Nettuno thoroughbred V-6. In the mid-engine two-seater, it’s rated at 621 horsepower, but in this mid-size SUV-like thing, it’s tuned to produce 523 horsepower and 457 lb-ft of torque.
2023 Maserati Grecale Trofeo trim levels are 77.9 inches wide, while the latter measures 191.3 inches from bumper to bumper due to its specific body kit. Either way, the Grecale is relatively big for its segment: Porsche’s Macan, its intended closest competitor, checks in at 184.3 inches long and is one of the smaller in the segment. Grecale’s weight ranges from 4,431 to 4,629 pounds.
One look at the Grecale’s front end shows what Maserati meant when it announced the MC20’s exterior design would influence the rest of the range: the swept-back headlights are positioned above a wide grille with the trident emblem proudly positioned front and center. It’s not a clone of the MC20, but the family resemblance is perceptible. Moving beyond the nose, the three vents that have become part of Maserati’s design language are positioned on each fender, below the emblem that denotes the trim level, while the roof line peaks above the driver and slopes down towards a spoiler integrated into the hatch — designers put a bigger focus on sport than on utility.
