$38,000.00

Latest Update: 2025 Mazda CX-70 unveiled in January 2024, cost you $38,000.

Mazda is intensifying its focus on mid-size SUVs with the introduction of the 2025 CX-70, a fresh take on the CX-90 but tailored for five occupants instead of seven. This new SUV shares its platform, powertrains, and most of its bodywork with its larger counterpart, suggesting that if the three-row model appealed to you, the two-row version might just capture your interest as well.

However, there are subtle distinctions between the Mazda mid-sizers. The CX-70 is imbued with a touch more sportiness in its styling, boasting a greater reliance on gloss black rather than the chrome-heavy CX-90. Notably, the grille adopts a black mesh design, departing from the CX-90’s brightwork, and the front bumper features larger simulated grilles leading to the air curtain generators in the corners. The rear bumper also undergoes a redesign, showcasing faux vents on the corners. Dark finishes extend to the mirror caps, door handles, and roof rails, with available 21-inch wheels featuring gloss black pockets and machined faces.

When examining the front end, the CX-70 exudes a more aggressive and visually appealing look compared to the CX-90. The latter’s flowing grille insert appears a tad swollen, akin to a nose that took a punch. Nevertheless, the CX-70 maintains a rounded roofline, creating a slight discord with the flowing bodywork and triangular rear quarter windows. The ovoid rear hatch, reminiscent of 1990s Taurus styling, gains a touch of visual dynamism thanks to the revised bumper design.

Upon entering the cabin, the CX-70 closely resembles the CX-90, at least until the realization sets in that there isn’t a third row. Exclusive to the CX-70 is the option for red leather with a black accent stripe, enhancing an otherwise black interior adorned with contrasting red stitching on the door panels and steering wheel. However, the gray plastic trim with a printed carbon fiber motif detracts from the overall premium feel. It is hoped that Mazda will provide options for the CX-90’s “kakenui” dashboard stitching and genuine wood trim.

In terms of features, the CX-70 mirrors much of what the CX-90 offers, marking the first Mazda to integrate Amazon Alexa into its infotainment system. This feature allows voice control for various on-board functions, including climate controls and infotainment, while also syncing up with Amazon-capable in-home equipment. The CX-70 introduces Unresponsive Driver Support as part of its adaptive cruise control and lane-centering functionality. In cases where the driver fails to respond to escalating prompts and warnings (such as during a medical emergency), the car will gradually come to a stop in its lane and activate hazard lights.

Under the hood, the CX-70 inherits the powertrains of the CX-90, featuring a turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six producing 280 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque in its base form or 340 hp and 369 lb-ft for the high-output S variant. Additionally, a plug-in hybrid powertrain is available, generating 323 hp and 369 lb-ft through a 2.5-liter four-cylinder, 17.8-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery, and 68-kilowatt electric motor.

Standard across the board is rear-biased all-wheel drive, with a 5,000-pound towing capacity for the six-cylinder and a 3,500-pound cap for the hybrid. While final specifications for weight have yet to be disclosed, the CX-70 is anticipated to be incrementally lighter than its larger counterpart, potentially contributing to improved efficiency. An electric-only range of about 30 miles for the PHEV variant and a combined fuel economy rating of 26 miles per gallon for the six-cylinder could be enticing upgrades.

Sharing the same 122.8-inch wheelbase as the CX-90, the CX-70 is nearly identical in length. However, without the need to accommodate a third-row seat, the CX-70 boasts a spacious cargo area with additional storage beneath the floor. Imaginations may run wild with visions of cross-country journeys, complete with comfortable rest stops and nights under the stars.
