The Mercedes-Benz Vision AVTR made its debut in 2020, but the three-pointed star is bringing it back to celebrate the second Avatar movie’s release. We recently had the chance to get up close and personal with the Vision AVTR, seeing its futuristic propulsion system and unusual bodywork up close.

The Vision AVTR is similar to Mercedes’ current electric vehicle lineup if you squint. For instance, the bold grille panel features a Mercedes-Benz star in the center and a few distinctive design details to give it a more sophisticated and three-dimensional appearance. The car’s smooth bodysides also remind me of Mercedes EQS sedans, but the full-glass doors promise a unique view out the window.

The AVTR, on the other hand, is the stuff of concept car fantasies. There are dozens of tiny scales on the rear deck that can either tilt forward for downforce, backward for an air-brake effect, or side to side for cornering as a rudder. When needed, these scales can retract into the bodywork for maximum aerodynamics. Together with the taillights and indicators, the lights that illuminate the scales make it clear what you want to accomplish.

A solid rubber sheath that wraps around the wheel faces makes up the bubble-shaped rolling stock. The sleek flower design on the wheels itself is in keeping with the conservation and preservation of nature themes of the Avatar series. In addition, the AVTR can be steered with four wheels, even to the side.

The Vision AVTR “comes to life” as you approach it with a glowing ballet of LED animations and a check control for the rear deck scales. The AVTR seems like it could parallel park in a space with just a few inches of room or make a U-turn with a wheelbase as short as it is. Although it is a bizarre experience, it is also a lot of fun.
