It’s not often that automakers spill the beans on their scrapped projects, especially when they involve top-secret supercars that never made it into production. But Porsche recently gave esteemed journalist Steve Sutcliffe from The Intercooler a tantalizing glimpse into a supercar that was supposed to follow the 918 Spyder, which was retired in 2015 after producing just 918 cars.

According to Marcos Marques, Project Manager of eFuels at Porsche, the company initially planned to develop a flat-eight engine for an entirely different car. This wasn’t just a casual idea, as the automaker actually built an experimental vehicle based on a Cayman chassis with a mid-mounted twin-turbo, 5.0-liter engine producing a staggering 750 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. What’s more, the engine had a high-pitched redline of 9,000 rpm and was mated to a manual gearbox, making for an incredibly thrilling ride.

Porsche spent over a year testing the flat-eight beast on the roads around Weissach before abruptly ending the project. Despite this, the automaker has assured fans that a successor to the 918 Spyder is on the cards, as a “hypercar is always part of Porsche’s strategy,” as per CEO Oliver Blume. However, he stressed that the new model wouldn’t hit the market before 2025, and only when it can showcase new technology rather than just rehashing existing hardware.
