Fortunately, we won’t have to wait too much longer before we find out for sure. Porsche is expected to reveal the Macan EVs this year, with production expected to commence before 2024. Expected to be unveiling the new electric Macan later this year, Porsche is putting the final touches on its first all-electric crossover. Spotted high in the Alps by our trusty spy photographers, the fully electric successor of the popular Macan can be seen testing in tandem with a Cayenne.

Porsche is hard at work testing the new crossover extensively, with the test car seen here towing the bigger Cayenne. Although we don’t know precisely what’s going on here, seeing the vehicles in such proximity does at least provide us with a good idea of exactly how big the Macan EV will be.

Seen next to the SUV, the electric crossover also looks rather pointy up front, which may suggest that the Porsche aerodynamicists have had their way with the crossover. Indeed, Michael Steiner, head of development, said in May 2021 that the Macan EV will look quite different from the standard model and will get a unique front fascia. Still sporting the camouflage that has graced the test vehicle for over a year, many questions remain about the design’s finer points. We can, however, still see the frameless doors, the active lower grille vents, and the active spoiler.

Power, however, remains a matter of conjecture. The Audi A6 e-Tron concept, with which this shares its platform, was said to be good for at least 470 hp (350 kW/476 PS) and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque. 

The all-electric Porsche EVs is expected to be unveiled later this year, and production is expected to start just a little later. That will likely mean that it is sold as a 2024MY vehicle.

 Here’s everything you need to know about the next Porsche electric car, the Porsche Macan Electric (working title), which would rival the Audi e-Tron Sportback and the BMW iX after it breaks cover in 2024. The first Porsche Macan EV prototypes wear heavy camouflage and carry plenty of disguises to delude onlookers until it’s showtime. The silhouette cannot be masked and so we have a fair idea of the body style and the overall shape of the upcoming Porsche electric car. Porsche is yet to finalize the name of the electric SUV (pictured) which would be similar to the Macan on the tape.

The first-gen Porsche Macan, which broke cover in 2013, is a modern-day SUV with a gently sloping roofline. While it will continue alongside the next-gen model until Porsche’s main markets are ready for full-scale EV adoption, the Porsche Macan electric will be an SUV-coupe with a hunchback. The SUV-coupe body style would help in differentiation and achieve better aerodynamics. In addition to a sloping roofline, expect an active spoiler edge on the trunk to improve the airflow for enhanced range. The new Porsche Macan EV prototype model was recently spied undergoing tests once again with heavy camouflage in the Alps. The automaker has been testing it for more than a year and it appears that the electric SUV is inching closer to its final stages of testing. And given that, Porsche is likely to reveal the Macan EV sometime later this year.

The new platform

The Porsche EVs will be the first car under the Volkswagen Group to utilize the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) — jointly developed by Porsche and Audi. This luxury electric vehicle architecture supports different body styles, including saloons, estates, crossovers, and SUVs. Notably, it also uses technology similar to the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform. As Porsche is designing the next-gen Macan as an EV from the outset, it is at liberty to make some principle changes to the design that can significantly improve aerodynamics and energy efficiency. For example, it can keep the nose lower. Porsche is one of the few brands well-known for holding on to its traditions. However, with the EV era calling for radical changes inside-out, it has acknowledged the need to break the rules in some aspects. Consider the adoption of a fully digital instrument cluster in the Porsche Taycan, for instance. Similarly, it may introduce a virtual mirror option, a feature that potential customers would expect to see on the ’everyday’ alternative from the VW Group portfolio – the Audi e-Tron Sportback. The interior of the Porsche Macan EV should be clean, driver-focused, and highly digital, something Porsche is gradually adopting as it transitions to the EV era, as we noted above. Expect a minimalist and classy design for the dashboard, a curved, fully digital instrument cluster, a large touchscreen infotainment system, and a passenger-side display in the Macan EV.

The Macan SUV has been Porsche’s best-selling vehicle since 2016, and the compact luxury crossover is expected to spawn a new all-electric version for the 2024 model year. While it will bear the Macan nameplate, the 2024 Macan EV will ride on a new electric platform that will also underpin the upcoming Audi A6 e-Tron. Little is known about the Macan EV’s powertrain at the moment, but Porsche says it will have significantly more range than the brand’s electric sedan, the Taycan, which currently tops out at 227 miles on a charge according to the EPA. Utilizing the Taycan’s 800-volt electrical architecture should allow for rapid charging times. Macan EV trims will likely mirror those of the gas Macan, with a more powerful S model and a range-topping GTS providing the highest level of performance. The 2024 Macan EV will be, at least initially, sold alongside the gas-powered Macan. It is clear Porsche, like many other carmakers, is working towards electrification. Although the Porsche Taycan, with all its versions, makes it apparent, the upcoming all-electric Porsche Macan is the next in line to go electric. New spy footage captures the Macan EV doing cold-weather testing, accompanied by two Cayenne pilot cars. It also seems like the test prototype is experiencing difficulties in the cold, snowy climate – something Porsche is currently addressing as the vehicle nears production. Official range figures won’t be available until the Macan EV’s reveal, but Porsche is claiming that the electric SUV will be able to travel significantly longer on a charge than the current Taycan, which maxes out at 227 miles of EPA-estimated range. Porsche is planning to offer two battery sizes just like in the Taycan, but the fact that most American Taycan buyers have opted for the longer-range model means only the larger battery may come to the United States. The Macan EV is expected to utilize the 800-volt architecture found in the Taycan, which allows for rapid charging at up to 270 kilowatts. The release date of the 2023 Porsche Macan EV will likely be in late 2022 or early 2023. The Macan EV will be available to buy at Porsche dealerships throughout the United States, as well as in select international markets. This sighting of the Porsche Macan EV includes two different models, all being pushed to the limit in extremely cold temperatures. These images reveal the new front end with split headlights, although, there’s still some very thick camo, so we can’t mack out mich else. There is a retractable spoiler behind the rear window, and it was extending above speeds of approximately 50 km/h. Things can change, though if you’re a fan of how the Macan looks right now, you should still like what the Macan EV has to offer.

But despite sharing a name, the Porsche Macan EV is going to look distinct from the standard gas-powered Macan. Images of the EV prototype show that the EV’s headlights are slimmer and it skips the grill you’d find on a gas-powered car. After all, an electric engine doesn’t need a constant airflow like an internal combustion engine.

Testing images also show a lower roofline, suggesting the Macan EV will be more coupé-like than current Macan models. The rear also appears to have had some subtle changes.

There also appears to be a rotary dial, and it’s been speculated that this is for controlling the touchscreen so you don’t have to blindly tap away at a smooth glossy screen to get things done.

The rear lights are still camouflaged, but there appears to be a full-width LED cluster like the majority of modern Porsche cars.

As for the range, The Porsche EVs has an EPA-estimated range of 800 miles, which gives us an absolute bare minimum of what to expect.
