Renault has announced the triumphant return of the 5, a beloved supermini that bid adieu to the automotive stage in 1996. However, this reincarnation of the iconic hatchback comes with a twist – it will be an all-electric marvel, eschewing traditional combustion engines. Set to make its grand entrance next year, the small yet mighty EV aims to supersede its predecessor, the Zoe. In an exciting turn of events, spy shots have surfaced, offering a glimpse of the 5’s production-ready panels, shrouded in enigmatic camouflage. Previously, the keen-eyed car paparazzi had spotted a test mule ingeniously disguised beneath a modified, high-riding Clio body.
While the prototype remains tantalizingly concealed, certain features do strike a chord of familiarity. The design seems to hark back to the concept, with the final lighting elements adorning its silhouette. Though the steel wheels of the prototype may soon give way to more stylish alloys, complete with aero panels – a trend gaining popularity among both electric and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Noteworthy deviations from the concept include larger side mirrors and the addition of a shark fin antenna.
Renault has made a conspicuous alteration to the front of the vehicle, introducing a lower air intake ingeniously incorporating a radar sensor. If the disguising layers do not deceive, the prototype appears to boast conventional front door handles. A gentle reminder of the concept’s aesthetic reveals a sleeker side profile with flush door handles positioned at the front. Mirroring the Zoe and Clio, the reborn 5 features Alfa Romeo-inspired “hidden” rear door handles discreetly nestled near the C-pillar.
At the rear, enigmatic cutouts in the bumper, resembling exhaust tips, tease the onlooker, only to reveal their true purpose as potential red reflectors. Although the rear glass appears unusually diminutive, one cannot discount the possibility that the bulky camouflage may deceive the eye. Contrasting with the concept, the production-ready Renault 5 will proudly sport a rear wiper. The taillights, partially obscured from view, are expected to be substantially larger than the tantalizing glimpse provided, given the concept’s striking vertical lights. Additionally, an illuminating LED light bar on the tailgate will proudly showcase the renowned diamond logo with a prominent “5.”
As spies were confined to capturing the prototype from a distance, the inner sanctum of the small EV remains a mystery. However, a tantalizing glimpse suggests the presence of a tablet-like infotainment touchscreen protruding from the dashboard, accompanied by a fully digital rectangular driver’s display. Renault, keeping the concept’s cabin under wraps, tantalizes enthusiasts with this captivating first peek. In a clever utilization of resources, the revived 5 will not be an entirely new creation. Up to 70 percent of its components will be borrowed from the Clio and Captur, leveraging the adaptable CMF-B platform, tailor-made for electric endeavors.
By employing this innovative approach, the French automaker aims to curtail manufacturing costs by an impressive 30 percent when compared to the Zoe. The new 5 will house four large battery modules, arranged in a single layer, a departure from the Zoe’s assembly of 12 smaller modules, shedding a commendable 15 kilograms (33 pounds). This lighter battery pack promises not only higher energy density but also enhanced underbody rigidity, effectively reducing noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) levels.
