Latest Update: 2023 Rivian R1s released in 2022, with a starting price of $75,000.
The R1S came out late in the 2022 model year, so it stays the same in 2023. Several over-the-air software updates from Rivian have already enabled Camp Mode, Pet Mode, and the driving modes Soft Sand and Snow.
Currently, only the Adventure model is available, but a less expensive Explore trim should soon join the lineup.
The R1S has many features in common with its R1T pickup sibling, including its battery pack, powertrain, styling, and specifications. The Dual-Motor setup is the standard powertrain, producing 600 horsepower combined and offering all-wheel drive as standard. The R1S is incredibly quick thanks to the available Quad-Motor powertrain, which achieves 60 mph in 3.1 seconds at our test track. The R1S has an electric motor at each wheel thanks to this upgraded powertrain, giving it all-wheel drive and impressive off-road capability. The ground clearance of each model can be adjusted from eight to 15.0 inches thanks to the air suspension, which is found in all of them. During our testing, we were dissuaded by the R1S’s out-of-synch steering responses as well as its poor ride control, which at times made the vehicle excessively floaty and at other times caused strange front-to-rear porpoising. Since the R1T pickup performs significantly better in these areas, we are aware that this chassis has the potential to behave significantly better.
The R1S will eventually come with three different battery packs from Rivian; however, for the time being, it only comes with the Standard and Large packs, which have a driving range of 260 and 316 miles, respectively. Next year, a Max battery pack with the most range is expected to join the lineup. During our tests, the R1S with the Large battery could only travel 230 miles on the highway before needing to be recharged.
The R1S SUV is expected to get 73 MPGe in the city, 65 MPGe on the highway, and 69 MPGe all together, according to the EPA.
The R1S, like the R1T, has a beautiful cabin with modern styling, fancy leather, wood trim, and two large displays—one for the driver’s gauge display and one for the infotainment system. The R1S’s utility is enhanced by a third row of seats, a split tailgate, a 12-cubic-foot front trunk, a large rear cargo area, and a 12-cubic-foot rear trunk. Although the interior of the R1S is not as spacious as that of a Chevrolet Suburban, it still has enough room for a family and their belongings, and the third row can be used as seating for occasional guest adventurers. The R1S’s cargo-carrying capability is fully realized with the second and third rows folded, and the load floor is flat.
The main options (navigation, media, and climate controls) are always accessible at the bottom of the horizontally mounted infotainment system’s expandable tiles for each feature. To reduce system complexity, options slide out of tiles rather than being accessed through submenus. An onboard Wi-Fi hotspot, a wireless smartphone charging pad, and Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant are all standard features, but neither Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto are included.
