Latest Update: 2026 Rivian R2 is expected to be  released in the first half of 2026 with a maximum price of $45,000 and above.

The upcoming 2026 Rivian R2 is a much anticipated addition to the Rivian electric car portfolio. Rivian purposefully created the R2, a smaller, more reasonably priced version of its R1 SUVs, such as the R1S and R1T, to increase demand for the brand.  R2 is designed to appeal to a larger market and enable more drivers to own electric SUVs thanks to its small size and affordable price.

The R2 offers three distinct electric powertrain configurations. The base model comes with a single motor powering the rear wheels, while the dual- and tri-motor options provide all-wheel drive capability.

In the top spec tri-motor setup, two motors drive the rear axle, with an additional motor powering the front. Although specific horsepower ratings for the motors have not been disclosed, these versatile configurations offer varying levels of performance and traction to suit different driving needs.

Rivian estimates the R2 with the tri-motor arrangement will be able to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under 3.0 seconds, promising impressive speed and agility for drivers seeking exhilarating performance.

The R2 offers two battery options, likely mirroring the Standard and Large Battery choices from the larger R1 models, with a potential for a Max Battery option in the future. Rivian estimates the longest-range R2, equipped with the large pack in a single-motor variant, to exceed 300 miles. While charging specifications are pending, Rivian anticipates fast charging from 10 to 80 percent in under 30 minutes on a DC fast charger.

The R2’s cabin accommodates five passengers with ample storage, including a second glove box. It adopts a rugged-yet-luxurious design similar to the larger R1 models, with controls centralized through a large infotainment display.

In order to accommodate those who lead adventurous lives, Rivian provides optional extras like the Rivian Treehouse roof-top tent, which has a heated mattress and streaming screen in addition to a bike rack and a small travel kitchen.

The interior of the R2 showcases a 15.6-inch center infotainment display. It provides a comfort zone for travelers with two rows of seating for five people each.
