The upstart carmaker stunned us at the unveiling of the new Rivian R2 SUV by revealing the R3, a smaller, less expensive crossover. At the unveiling event, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe stated, “We’re so excited about what this delivers beyond what we’ve seen [with] R2.” “It compresses the R2 package and platform and incorporates it into our interpretation of what a crossover is.

The R3 is even smaller than the R2, which is somewhat smaller than Rivian’s first SUV, the R1S. According to Scaringe, the R3’s wheelbase is five inches shorter than the R2’s. The R2 and R3 use the same architecture, and the smaller SUV will be offered with powertrains consisting of one, two, or three motors.

Compared to the R2, the R3 has a considerably more elevated hatchback-like appearance, but unlike other hatchbacks, it has lift-up rear glass. Intriguingly, it also has two gloveboxes in addition to a front trunk. The R3X, a more athletic variant, will also be available. With larger wheels, a tri-motor transmission, and marginally higher ground clearance, it resembles a tiny rally vehicle.

Although Rivian hasn’t disclosed many details on the R3, it has stated that it will cost less than the R2’s projected $45,000. We might have to wait a while for the R3, as deliveries of the R2 are scheduled to start in the first half of 2026.
