With a whopping 191,900 units hitting the road last year, the Octavia solidified its reign as Skoda’s chart-topper. Now, poised for a 2024 refresh, it’s gearing up for a makeover featuring snazzy style tweaks, a beefier display, and a leaner engine lineup. Adding to the excitement, the Czech marque is unveiling the flagship RS, flaunting the practical wagon body style and a dash of extra power.
A roomier alternative to the freshly revamped Volkswagen Golf, the Octavia is flaunting its newfangled matrix LED headlights, sporting a slightly melty appearance. These cutting-edge lights boast an adaptive glare-free high beam, tagging along as an optional treat for the modest trims but scoring standard status on the RS. Farewell to the separate lower lights once nestled within the bumper since the second-gen Octavia RS facelift in 2009.
The rear design sees minimal tweaks, though the optional taillight design now exudes a subtle Audi-esque vibe. 2024 brings forth a refreshed range of alloy wheels, ranging from 16 to 19 inches, accompanied by daring hues like Phoenix Orange and Mamba Green. Even the make and model font have discreetly undergone revisions, while the RS badge at both ends gains a size upgrade.
Inside the cabin, familiarity reigns supreme, save for the spruced-up infotainment system boasting an enlarged 13-inch diagonal screen. Even the entry-level model gets pampered with a 10-inch digital instrument cluster and dual-zone automatic climate control. Trim and upholstery options receive a makeover, with ventilated and massaging front seats still up for grabs at an extra cost.
However, the engine lineup raises eyebrows with a conspicuous absence of plug-in hybrids, despite the Golf eHybrid holding its ground. Notably, the Octavia RS bids adieu to the 2.0-liter diesel, leaving only gasoline-powered options in its wake. The shift isn’t entirely surprising, given the dwindling popularity of diesels in Europe, where electric cars outsold them last year for the first time.
The demise of the diesel Octavia RS aligns with tightening emissions regulations, echoing the fate of the mechanically akin Golf GTD. Not a peep about the Octavia RS iV plug-in hybrid either, contrasting VW’s continued support for the Golf GTE.
The base Octavia kicks off with the beefier 1.5 TSI engine, available in standard and mild-hybrid configurations, delivering either 114 hp or 148 hp. Transmission options vary, with non-electrified variants sporting a six-speed manual gearbox and 48V technology variants equipped with a seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission. All 1.5 TSI models are strictly front-wheel drive.
At the helm, the flagship Octavia RS packs an upgraded 2.0 TSI engine churning out a meaty 261 hp, a 20 hp bump from its predecessor. Matching the gusto of the new Golf GTI, it offers 370 Nm of torque, retaining its predecessor’s figures. Say goodbye to the clutch pedal, echoing Wolfsburg’s DSG-only hot hatch mantra.
Looking ahead to 2025, an all-wheel-drive gasoline variant with a 2.0 TSI engine generating 201 hp will grace the scene, sending power to both axles via a DSG. Meanwhile, a diesel option remains in play, with a 2.0 TDI engine offering either 114 hp or 148 hp.
In terms of trims, Skoda is reshuffling the deck, offering the 2024 Octavia in Essence, Selection, Sportline, and RS flavors, with the luxury-oriented Laurin & Klement conspicuously absent.
As VW gears up for an all-electric next-gen Golf, this could potentially mark the end of the road for the Octavia in the combustion engine era. Since its stint under the VW Group umbrella, Skoda has rolled out over seven million units of its beloved Octavia across four generations. Let’s not forget the 360,000 units of the original rear-wheel-drive Octavia sold between 1959 and 1971. An Octavia-inspired electric wagon is slated to hit the market in 2026.
While hopes of Skoda gracing the shores of the United States are dim, former VW Group CEO Herbert Diess dashed such dreams in a Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA) session a couple of years back.
