Skoda, the Czech brand known for its innovative cars, is gearing up for a series of exciting debuts later this year. Among the eagerly awaited unveilings are the next-generation Superb and Kodiaq, set to make their grand entrance this fall. But that’s not all; Skoda is also giving a refresh to its popular Scala compact hatchback and Kamiq small crossover, and we’re just a week away from the big reveal on August 1. In the meantime, we’ve been treated to some tantalizing teaser images that hint at the significant changes coming with the facelift.

One of the notable upgrades is the introduction of matrix LED headlights, available at an extra cost for the 2024 Scala and Kamiq models. It’s a commendable move by Skoda to bring this cutting-edge technology to smaller and more affordable cars, following its successful implementation in the Karoq, Octavia, Kodiaq, Enyaq, and Superb. The Scala’s headlights have been extended to meet the grille, and sleek strips of daytime running lights have been added both at the top and bottom, giving the hatchback a fresh and distinctive light signature.

As for the Kamiq, Skoda has gone for a sleeker look by slimming down the separate LED strip positioned above slightly larger main headlights. While teasers have hinted at some changes to the taillights as well, they seem to be more on the subtle side. It’s important to note that these updates are part of the mid-cycle refresh, arriving about four years after the initial launch of these cars.

While the exterior is getting some love, we shouldn’t expect radical interior changes, as Skoda’s parent company, Volkswagen Group, is prioritizing investments in electric vehicles (EVs). With the Scala and Kamiq based on the MQB A0 platform, it’s unlikely that we’ll see the addition of mild-hybrid powertrains during the facelift. The focus is likely to remain on the 1.0 TSI and 1.5 TSI units, but the fate of diesel engines in these models remains uncertain.

Skoda has committed to a bold vision of boosting the share of EV sales in Europe to over 70% by the end of the decade. This ambitious plan will be facilitated by the introduction of six electric models by 2026. Given this direction towards electrification, the question arises about the future of the Scala and Kamiq with internal combustion engines. It’s reasonable to speculate that the next generation of these models might be fully electric, in line with Skoda’s electrification strategy.
