Latest Update: Volkswagen ID.2 Mule is coming in 2026 with similar design to ID.3 body.
Recently, there have been rumors regarding the future of the Volkswagen Golf beyond its current iteration, the Golf MK8. Speculations suggest that the Golf could be transformed into an electric vehicle for its upcoming generation. Although nothing has been officially confirmed, the first spy photos of a compact EV from Wolfsburg have emerged. The vehicle bears resemblance to the ID.3 but has a shorter wheelbase.
The exact details of VW’s future electric products remain unclear. While some reports suggest that the Golf EV will be previewed by an ID.2 concept, others claim that the ID.2 will be launched as a replacement for the battery-powered Polo. Regardless of which rumor holds true, it is expected that this new car will be the first to utilize Volkswagen’s MEB-Plus platform. This platform is engineered for front-wheel-drive vehicles but also supports dual-motor systems.
The prototype of the compact EV from Volkswagen has been spotted with short overhangs and small rear doors, although the final proportions are yet to be confirmed. The front doors appear to be larger than the rear ones. As the prototype is a mule using the components of the ID.3, it is too early to speculate about the exterior design. However, reports suggest that the upcoming vehicle will not resemble the ID. Life concept, and a new concept will be introduced soon.
Sources suggest that the electric vehicle will be approximately 4,250 millimeters (167.3 inches) long, making it smaller than the current combustion-powered Golf. The hatch’s weight is expected to be between 1,600 to 1,700 kilograms (3,527 to 3,748 pounds), with rumors of a hot GTX version and a more rugged ID.2 X variant.
The development of the vehicle is in its early stages, and Volkswagen’s plans for it are yet to be confirmed. The current Golf will undergo a mid-cycle refresh next year, which will keep it on sale until 2027 or 2028. The new electric hatch is expected to arrive in 2025 or 2026, meaning that both models will coexist for at least a year or two.
