Latest Update: 2025 Volvo XC40 is most likely to launch next year, and up until that pricing is mysterious.

It has been 25 years since Volvo last sold a car with rear-wheel drive. However, for the 2025 model year, RWD is making a comeback with the updated XC40 and C40 Recharge models. These electric vehicles offer two RWD versions, one with a 235 horsepower (175 kW) motor and a 69-kWh battery, and another with a 248 horsepower (185 kW) motor and an 82-kWh battery.

Both RWD models of the XC40 and C40 Recharge have a 0 to 62 mph acceleration time of 7.4 seconds and a top speed of 100 mph. The base model with the smaller battery has a range of 460 kilometers in the WLTP cycle and 240 miles per EPA for the XC40, while the C40 Recharge has a range of 470 km and 245 miles. Choosing the larger battery increases the range to 520 kilometers and 270 miles for the XC40 and 530 kilometers and 275 miles for the C40 Recharge.

According to Volvo, the 69-kWh battery in the base model can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 34 minutes using a 130-kW DC public charger. The larger battery pack in the more expensive version can charge at a faster rate of up to 200 kW (an increase from 150 kW), taking approximately 28 minutes to charge from 10 to 80 percent.

The dual-motor XC40 and C40 Recharge models come with an 82-kWh battery, which allows them to have a range of 500 kilometers (WLTP-certified) for the XC40 and 510 kilometers for the C40 Recharge. For the 2024 model year, Volvo’s engineers have improved the battery cooling which has increased the range by up to 60 kilometers for the XC40 Recharge AWD.

In addition, for the 2025 model year, Volvo has also introduced newly designed 19-inch wheels that have been optimized for aerodynamic efficiency, reducing drag.

As a final note, Volvo is also installing a new two-phase onboard charger in its plug-in hybrid models from the 60 and 90 series, this new charger doubles the maximum charging power to 6.4 kW.
